As a criminal defense attorney, it is not for me to decide whether medical marijuana should be legalized in Florida or any other state for that matter. But as a resident of Florida who gets to see more than my share of difficult situations, I am investigating the merits of legalized marijuana use for certain medical situations.
I have intently watched the pleas from parents and loved ones who know firsthand the sheer torture of watching someone suffer with seizures and nausea. To see a loved one in that kind of trauma and pain is heartbreaking, (yes, attorneys do have hearts). On the other side of the coin, to witness that same loved one be free of seizures, to feel good because the nausea has subsided, that must be an uplifting experience.
For years we as a nation have been fed the data, marijuana is dangerous, it leads us down the path of stronger drug use, there is nothing good about this plant, to now shift our thinking is not going to be an easy process. But when even Dr. Sanjay Gupta begins to change his position, when we see that a small child will be able to live a relatively normal life because her seizures have lessened or ceased because of an oil derived from marijuana plants, I think it’s time to listen.
